Weiss' Hi-Top Caddis certainly won't be the prettiest fly you see this week, but this fly was designed to serve a very specific purpose. While the Hi-top caddis works quite well as a stand alone dry fly, it was designed to be fished as part of a long distance dry-dropper setup where the fly wouldn't be traveling fast or shed water easily. Its purpose was to deliver a small Firefly or BP perdigon properly at distance, while being subtle enough to not disturb technical fish. This requires a fly that floats well without excess bulk or weight and doesn’t push too much air during the cast. This is why it features a thread body and very sparse synthetic wing. The Hi-Top Caddis works quite well on a euro dry-dropper setup, or can be tied even more sparsely and fished as a single dry. You can tie this fly in any color combination you want to match caddis in your local rivers.
