I grew up fly fishing for trout, pike and the odd grayling in the west of Scotland, where I fell in love with simple functional flies that do what they're supposed to. Now almost forty years later I've lived and fished in several countries and currently split my fishing between warm water for carp, black bass and snakehead, and salt water species whether it's Tokyo Bay seabass, mahi or tuna. When I'm not at home it's trevally, bones and triggers around southern Japan and other locations the South Pacific and Indian Oceans. After all these years, I still believe in putting function first when it comes to designing flies, it's nice if they look good but they have to fish as intended and catch fish before any other considerations.
